[Classic 1975] The Image (aka The Punishment of Anne)

Radley Metzger is one of the great giants of exploitation filmmaking, one of a handful who managed to prosper even after the great age of exploitation ended in the late 1960s. While others like Russ Meyer saw their best work dwindle behind them, Metzger rose to the occasion. It's widely viewed that his 1975 film "The Image" is his best, an adaptation of the Jean De Berg novel that overtly seems to trash up an already somewhat trashy story but winds up adding a seemingly unintended, or perhaps subconscious level of poetry to the proceedings.
The story is basically a straightforward sadomasochistic piece of erotica centering on a relationship between an older and a younger woman. But in Metzger's hands the world they inhabit, the emotions they arouse and the people with whom they associate wind up forming a collage of sensations which externalizes the relationship for the audience in a way that few films of this sort ever manage to do. It's perhaps the only one of Metzger's films that exhibits his instincts so forcefully, helping redeem the reputation of a man that far too many seem too willing to dismiss.
Extras include several audio options -- mono or remixed stereo, of which the original mono is sometimes the most pleasant -- as well as an isolated score track and excellent liner notes by Stephen R. Bissette which not only comment on the film but on Metzger's career as a whole.
